Grind Central Coffee

Grind Central Coffee

Europeans first encountered coffee in the middle of the fifteenth century in the Middle East. It quickly spread around the world and has become one of the most popular beverage in almost every country.

The plants are believed to have originated in Africa, and for many years it was illegal to smuggle them out of the area. Early in the seventeenth century, the Dutch managed to secure some plants, and plantations soon flourished in Ceylon and Java. As the demand for coffee grew, competition increased, with the result that South and Central America became major exporters.

With the British embargo on tea during both the American Revolution and the War of 1812, coffee consumption in the US skyrocketed. In recent years, the new flavors and specialty drinks have made huge inroads among age groups once dedicated to soda instead. It is now possible to find bottled coffee blends in any convenience store cooler. In addition, most offer cappuccino machines with several flavors, as well as brewed regular and decaffeinated.

More than two thirds of the coffee sold is Arabica. It is the least bitter type grown, although Robusta, which has a much higher caffeine level, is often used in espresso. Most Arabica beans are products of Brazil, eastern Africa, and parts of the Middle East. Robusta is usually grown in western Africa and Asia. Beans from different countries, and even different regions within the same country, can vary in flavor and appearance.

The beans used for the beverage are actually the seeds of berries that grow on bushes. The beans are washed, dried, and normally roasted, although a very small percentage is sold for home or vendor roasting. After sorting by color, with darker beans considered mellower, they may be ground and packaged or shipped for further processing. Some will be decaffeinated or have flavorings added, which can happen at either site.

Once purchased, coffee should be kept in a cool, dark place, preferably in an air-tight container. Too much humidity can cause the grind to lump together, and so a dry environment is preferred. Most people keep the ungrounded beans in their freezer.

More flavors are appearing frequently, not just in the coffee itself but also in creamers and syrups marketed for specifically for the beverage. Specialty shops sell a huge variety of ready to drink beverages as well as their own brands of grind. It therefore seems that coffee is going to be the people's choice for a long time to come.
